knitted cap

This cap had been sitting in my UFO box for two years because I had started knitting it without a pattern and was unsure how to finish it. Now I got it out and finished it because the cold (-10 degree Celsius here!) really made me want a new hat. It took only two hours to finish and was quite easy after all. I know it turned out a bit long, but the up side on this is that I can wear it even when I wear my long hair in a bun. It was done in fingering weight socks wool and was done from 150 stitches cast on on 4 needles. It is surprisingly warm and cosy for such a thin wool. Maybe that’s because it’s 75% real sheep wool, not some plastic stuff.

edit: here is the pattern for the upper two pattern bands, just in case someone likes them. I don’t post the whole patter for a hat because this one is far from perfect and I’m busy developing a better pattern.

tast 46 and 47

So I finally did a bit more stitching. I really love pekinese stitch! Thorn stitch is just another method of couching in my book, but a very interesting one. I’ll sure use this one again. Only that braided stitch is not to my taste at all. I think it comes loose too easiely even when done correctly.

I’m being a bad blogger again

I’m sorry, there weren’t posts from me for quite a while now, and probably there won’t be any until the coming weekend. I’m having a busy week: an interview for a job and a presentation at the vocational training seminar that will be marked, and an important part of the end mark.
The other reason why I don’t get any art done at the moment is the weather, which is always a good thing to blame. It is freezing and snowing here, that prompted me to dig out the box with knitting UFOs and finish a few warm things.

tast 45 – pekinese stitch

So here is my tast stitch for last week, pekinese stitch . it is kind of rough because I’m planning to paint over it this time.

So I’m back on track with tast after a chaotic month. I’m sorry my postings are a bit random these days, this vocational training is really keeping me busy, and my head is bursting with creative ideas, so sometimes I have a hard time deciding what to do first…

the fascination of pattern

When I needed something mindless to do on the commute this week I started knitting little things in order to make a dent into my stash of socks wool leftovers. When I was bored in class I doodled multicolour knitting patterns to use later. I wasn’t really planning to publish them,, then I saw the postings on pattern by Jowynn (gold embroidery) and Elizabeth (pattern darning) , and thought that my doodles might be a useful addition to a discussion, although they are nowhere near as great as the work of those two.

I’m also quite sure that any possible combination of knitting stitches has been done before, thinking them up was fun nevertheless. The little crosses are supposed to be the colour of the background, the green and blue parts additional colours. But of course they also can be done the other way round.

The last picture shows a pattern that was so simple I didn’t write it down.

testing new techniques: painted bondaweb

I hadĀ four days off that vocational training seminar because of all hallow’s day. I used this time for getting a bit playful and creative. I’m sorry, I don’t remember in which blog I read about this technique. I painted bondaweb-like stuff (called vliesofix in Germany) with acrylics, let it dry and then ironed it on beige embroidery fabric. Next I removed the paper and ironed orange organza on top.

Well, it turned out way more dark and dull than I thought it would. Also, the whole thing got quite stiff. It looks better on the scan than IRL, really. Next time I’ll try white cambric as background. But first I’ll have to do something with this one. And catch up on tast. And work a bit on my other WISPs. Sigh.

I did do in progress scans, but I’m not going to force these onto you. Maybe I will post in-progress shots from some future similar piece, when I really can get good results with this technique.

arts and crafts market find

Last weekend, I visited a small local arts and crafts market. Of course I couldn’t resist buying something, this time it was this lovely handspun wool made from merino and alpaca in earth colours. It is too thick for knitting for my taste, but I think it will be OK for couching.

I was so thrilled by my find that I started a project at once instead of just stashing it. as if I don’t already have too many UFOs…. The fabric is a cheap deco fabric from my stash, it is very shiny and has irregular plisse folds. I’m curious if and when I’ll get anywhere with this piece.
